Weekly Photo Challenge – Treating yourself at Rizzardini’s patisserie in Venice

We all need a treat now and then don’t we? How do you treat yourself? With a pamper session, a nice glass of wine or a fancy meal? Personally I head to Rizzardini’s patisserie in the San Polo district of Venice to pick out a cake….or maybe two depending on how big a treat I need! Here are just three of my all time favourites but don’t forget to leave me a comment below with your best treats!

Rizzardini’s chocolate éclair is a light as a feather. Made from puff pastry, filled with wonderful whipped cream and topped with a chocolate fondant icing it always hits the spot as a bite-sized indulgence. Mmmmm, don’t mind if I do!

The éclair is swiftly followed by the fritella or fried doughnut served up after Epiphany through to the end of Carnival. You can either indulge in a plain fritella or one filled with crème patissier or zabaglione made with egg yolks, sugar and Marsala wine. Now that’s a treat that can’t be resisted – I am just thankful that they’re only on sale for a couple of months in the run up to Lent!

And finally, I love a sfera di Casanova or Casanova’s ball! Its a golf ball sized rich chocolate truffle rolled in white chocolate pieces that just melts in the mouth – if you need a hit of chocolate it is just the job although I can’t vouch for its aphrodisiac properties alla Casanova!

Rizzardini’s have been treating Venetians to cream puffs, cakes and crunchy biscuits since 1742 so if you need a treat pop by for an espresso or spritz and a sfera. Just don’t leave it to late in the afternoon otherwise your favourites may have been snapped up! Now then, who wants cake…..?!

Oooh, before I forget, there’s just one last thing – if you have enjoyed this or any other posts over the last few months, please nominate DreamDiscoverItalia for the Italy Magazine Blogger Awards HERE! Nominations are open until 30th November 2015 so there is no time to waste! I’m so happy I’ll be back in Venice at the right time, and that time is fritelle time. I’ve never sampled Casanova’s balls …

    • Oooh Yvonne you’re in for a treat!! Fritelle are scrumptious and very tasty with a coffee or hot chocolate on a cold carnival day! I hope you have a fabulous time in Venice and manage to catch some of the carnival fun!! Thanks for popping by and feel free to check out some of my posts on the regatta della Befana at Epiphany and all the carnival goings on! Buona vacanza! Happy holidays!

I have to admit I don’t much like Carnivale. I do like the events in Cannaregio which are excellent and not commercialised nor overrun with tourists.

I’m sure I’ll have a good time in Venice, and eat my weight in fritelle, all for the sake of science of course, to answer the question of which are the best and where to find them. :-0

      • I like your style Yvonne and I know why you mean about Cannaregio having much more local events. Its definitely my favourite area of town for those fab little local bars and restaurants and there are some real gems! And don’t miss the savoury cicchetti (Venetian tapas) for a tasty nibble or three to keep you going as you explore! If you would like any suggestions of spots to try let me know! Happy exploring!!! ;o)

  2. I think I’d go for the fritella con zabaglione ; )

Great choice le sfere! I also love Rizzardini’s, always stop for a coffee and a little pastina, I love their apple pastries. Do try their sweet marzipan breads!
