Venice Carnival – Water Parade

Day 2 of Venice Carnival started with aqua alta, high water, and flooding in some parts of the city including the Rialto, St Mark’s and Cannareggio. Not ideal for spectators. But fortunately it didn’t subdue this morning’s celebrations as they were taking place on the water anyway with a masked water parade kicking off the day.

This way for the carnevale!!

The continuation of last night’s Festa Veneziana saw a regatta of gondole, dragon boats and barges set off from Punta della Dogana in St Mark’s Basin around 11.15am to row slowly up the Grand Canal.

Headed by a red-eyed rat, a tongue-in-cheek emblem for the city that allegedly has 6 rats for every resident (eugh!), the flotilla paddled, sculled and rowed their way past the Accademia museum under the Rialto Bridge crowded with spectators and on towards the Rio di Cannaregio.

And as the rowers propelled their craft on, a solo singer sang a love song to the city, Viva Venezia, accompanied by a guitarist.

The rowers replied with a traditional Venetian salute by raising their oars – “Alzate i vostri remi!”

And the masked crews rowed on up to Cannaregio where local food and wine awaited to keep the party rolling throughout the day.

Meanwhile back at Punta della Dogana, there was a piano concert with a difference as the pianist and his instrument were suspended above the water! Sadly I didn’t get to see it but here’s a photo thanks to someone who did!

How very exciting. The floats are so colourful and interesting and your photos are great

  2. What an enjoyable look into the Venetian carnevale! I had no idea about the costumed boat regatta! How creative the decorated gondolas are… And how adults get costumed just like the kids!
Your photos are so colorful and really make me feel as if I’m right there in Bella Venezia !
