Weekly Photo Challenge – Gone, but not forgotten

At first glance this photo just looks like a group of old men sheltering from the noonday sun.

Waiting to say goodbye

Waiting….

But after I’d taken it I realised that they were waiting for something.

San Gimignano

San Gimignano, Tuscany

They were waiting for the Vigili del Fuoco, or Fire Brigade, to arrive. Sadly, though, the firemen weren’t coming to put out a fire or rescue a cat stuck up a tree. They were coming to mourn and commemorate the death of one of their young colleagues who had died fighting a house fire. And the old men were waiting to pay their tributes too. The firefighter was gone but his life and service were not forgotten and never will be.

  1. Hauntingly beautiful… Very poignant tribute to a fallen firefighter…. The black and white makes these photos all the more powerful
