Weekly Photo Challenge – Descent

Vatican Museum spiral staircase

Vatican Museum spiral staircase

Every week WordPress, who host these blogs, run a photo challenge based around a one word theme.

This week’s topic is “descent” which immediately made me think of these two beautiful staircases – the top one is in the Vatican Museum in Rome and the lower one is tucked away down an alley off a narrow back street in Venice.

Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo, Venice

Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo, Venice

Legend has it that the owner of Palazzo Contarini was too lazy to walk up stairs so had a staircase built that was big enough for him to ride his horse up! Now that is really lazy! But at least he built a beautiful staircase which is known locally as the scala del bovolo or snail staircase. Bovolo means snail in Venetian dialect, whereas in Italian the word is chiocciola.

So which one do you prefer or do you have another staircase in Italy that you love? Leave a comment and let me know!

I agree, the Bovolo staircase is one of the very first things I sought out the first time I came to Venice and I love it!! I’ve seen it dozens of times now as I always take friends who come to visit, but I never get bored of seeing its beauty!! Thanks for popping by!

Could the Spanish Steps in Rome be considered a staircase?
