There is always something going on in Venice. Always! This week has been a bit more A-list than usual as Oscar winning director Paolo Sorrentino has been in town to film scenes for his new film “La Giovinezza” (Youth). I put that in the exciting category!!
The new film written and directed by the Neapolitan, is a return to some of his key themes of art, desire and aging and tells the story of Fred and Mick, two men on the verge of eighty, who decide to go on holiday together. Played respectively by Sir Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel, Fred and Mick book into a hotel in the Alps where they consider their lives, their children and what the future may hold for them. The film is to be filmed on location in Switzerland, Italy and England with Sorrentino reportedly choosing to shoot some scenes, especially the night shots, in Venice for its beautiful old buildings and canals.
Italian favourite Sorrentino, who won the Best Foreign Film Oscar this year for his film “La Grande Bellezza” (The Great Beauty) has an all-star cast for his new venture including Sir Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel, Rachel Weisz, Jane Fonda and Paul Dano, who recently played in another Oscar winner, “12 Years A Slave.” Caine and Keitel have both been spotted on location in Venice this week and I found the film crew on their last night shoot after noticing them setting up earlier in the day in Piazza San Marco (St Mark’s Square) and, nosy as ever, asking a handy policeman what was going on!
Giovinezza will be Sorrentino’s second film using English-speaking actors after his collaborations with Sean Penn and Frances McDormand in “This must be the place” in 2011 and will be premiered at Cannes on 20th May 2015. Watch the trailer here. I, for one, cannot wait to see the final Director’s Cut!
